Codependency: Caring Without Losing Yourself

Do you feel responsible for keeping everyone happy? Do you say yes when you want to say no, or feel guilty putting yourself first?

Codependency describes relationship patterns where another person’s needs take priority so often that your own needs, boundaries, and well-being get pushed aside. You may spend so much time supporting others that you lose touch with what you want or need.

What Can Codependency Look Like?

  • Saying yes to avoid conflict or disappointment.

  • Feeling responsible for someone else’s emotions and choices.

  • Giving more than you can comfortably manage.

  • Feeling valuable only when someone needs you.

  • Ignoring your needs to keep a relationship going.

These patterns can leave you feeling exhausted, resentful, or afraid to speak up.

“You can care for someone without carrying everything for them.”

Where Does Change Begin?

Start by noticing when you agree out of guilt or fear. Before saying yes, ask yourself: “Do I want to do this, and do I have the capacity?”

Practice small boundaries, such as taking time before answering a request or setting aside time for yourself. You can listen, offer support, and show love while allowing others to take responsibility for their choices.

Your needs deserve space in your relationships, too.
